New Text books available for teachers and students

New books for students and teachers of aviation English are available on the market.  Below is a list of some of these new texts and a short review of my findings of their usefulness and objectives.  Each is hyperlinked to the publisher and/or where to purchase.

Climb Level 4:  Climb Level 4, developed by Mayflower College and Carnegie Speech, is a course of English language in an aviation context for non-native speakers.  The course is delivered fully online with voice recognition technologies and advanced software which evolves with the students' needs and progress.  The course offers up to 100 hours online.

Flight Speak:  Aviation Technical English materials that can be used for self study and incredibly useful for classroom settings.  Mike McGrath, a pioneer in aviation English, has materials for pilots, ATC as well as helicopter pilots, ground maintenance and ground staff as well as airport personnel.  His material is based on over 30 years experience of aviation technical English as a second language.  Mike's written and audio material as well as computer based learning instruction are perfect for the teacher and student who want to learn the language used in aviation.

Mike also has a teacher's manual for teachers of English as a second language interested in learning and discovering secrets of teaching aviation technical English.

Cleared for Takeoff Books 1 and 2:
After using inappropriate general English books in the aviation language classroom for lack of market available aviation specific English language learning material, my students were relieved, motivated and enthusiastic when they were first introduced to their new course books, Cleared for Takeoff by Liz Mariner.  Finally, there is a way to learn English necessary for flight in one course made for pilots by pilots.

Some examples of relevant language teaching in an aviation theme:

  • Students learn to formulate questions by means of exercises throughout almost all units. These accomplished through role-play in specifics of aircraft, the traffic pattern, speaking with the instructor (i.e. Unit 3, The Aircraft “which aircraft has low wings?” and Unit 5, Let’s Go Flying “what does “taking over’ mean?”)
  • Present Continues by describing the movement of aircraft positions in the traffic pattern (Unit 6, Introduction to the Traffic Pattern).
  • Teaching the use of present simple, first conditional (so important in briefing situations) and cause and effect are addressed in Unit 3, The Aircraft by using the “Language Associated with Engine and Propeller Controls”.
  • Prepositions are taught through Unit 5, Let’s Go Flying with respect to the cockpit layout.
  • Adjective order is taught in Unit 11, VFR Navigation.

THE CLEARED FOR TAKEOFF TEACHER'S SUPPLEMENT

A vital aid for those teaching with the Cleared for TakeOff Books.  A great help for those teachers who are not Aviation Professionals.  From a non-pilot point-of-view, the Teacher’s Supplement helps with answers and explanations for various situations one might face by not being an aviator, this also is a plus when faced with student pilots whose knowledge of flying in and outside the traffic pattern is limited.
